Amagyigyedm gitwaap (“Friendly Neighbours”): Cooperation and Conflict Resolution between Nations in the Sm’algyax-Speaking Legal Traditions)

Funded by the North Coast Skeena First Nations Stewardship Society (NCSFNSS)

This project, undertaken through a collaborative partnership with four member nations of the NCSFNSS (Kitsumkalum, Kitselas, Gitxaała, and Gitga’at First Nations), is resulting in a major (200+ page) Analysis Report and Casebook. These resources, built from community-centred research with over 70 participants and an analysis of 25 narratives in the Partner Nations’ Oral Traditions, reflect the strength and sophistication of legal traditions that have addressed conflicts and cooperated in the face of common challenges for countless generations. The work is a tool for Sm’algyax-speaking nations to use and develop as they continue to manage issues of common concern among self-governing jurisdictions.
